about

Behind this pensive stream, this trickling train which carries us through life, a whole host of processes support us. We lie on these supportive substrates*, and I can tell you that elsewhere there lay theories which theorize that the brain operates on the very edge of the phase threshold between action and inaction. In this critical region, waves of neuronal firings flow as a cascading, patterned pitter-patter prompted by prior firings. The magnitude, dissipation, and extent of these waves almost follow a power law distribution, tuned to incorporate a fine balance of the stimulus and the noise of normal neuronal activity. This can be likened to grains of sand falling in an hourglass. Each dropping grain can cause a small avalanche, but most descents lead to accumulation, or only a tiny tumble.

Power law relationships emerge out of no one stream. They are found empirically in the brightness of stars, evolution's punctuated equilibria, the flow of the river Nile, and the lines of coastlines and mountain ridges**. These phenomena may point to an underlying, orchestrating function. As yet, we have only the stunning result and a stunning confusion.

When a sound's frequency spectrum follows a power law distribution, it can sound like a waterfall, or the ocean. Some call it pink noise. The present 40-minute track features a foundation of wavering, wandering pink noise. Its intent is to facilitate the immanent capability of rest and renewal which we carry.

Here we lie, somewhere sweetly between winter and spring, wake and sleep, un-sense and sense, birth and death.

In this phase transition across all axes, mysteriously, something magnificent persists, some self-ness which sits above the ephemeral 'us'. Maybe it's this or that or that or this; whatever it may be, it will be. We can trust in this change, loving the becoming.
